- Job Hunting - Part two:
-
- As promised, I have continued my search for a better job.
- I have contacted and contracted the services of a career counselor. Prices and services will undoubtedly vary for
these services. After the obligatory phone discussion about the services, my personal career coach recommended that I read a
short book entitled 'Strengths Finder 2.0' by Tom Rath. $21.95 bookstore price.
- The authors of this book help you determine your personal strengths characteristics. These are the strengths that make you unique. By identifying and nurturing you strengths, you can begin to focus on the career that you would be more suited for. In our society, we tend to focus on our weaknesses. The authors of this book have pointed out to its readers that by focusing
on our top five strengths, those themes that make us unique, we can focus on our passion. The type of career that utilizes
your strong values so that work is less an effort.
-
- My career coach explains it this way,
- * instead of picking up a paper
- * heading out to put in job applications and
- * submitting resumes and
- * waiting for the employers office to weed through hundreds of applicants then
- * to interview the small percentages of possible applicants
- * You are more likely to find a job that you will thrive in when the job matches your innate strengths.
-
I read the book and took the online test. I received my personal 5 strengths. Now, my career coach can focus his energies and
time into finding just those jobs that my personal strengths will make me a good candidate for. My first face to face meeting
with him will be tomorrow. I will report on the meeting shortly. In the mean time, buy, borrow or go to the library and check
out the book 'Strength Finder 2.0' by Tom Rath. It is a short but valuable read which can help save you time by focusing your
energies were it will do you the most good.
- After reading the book and taking the online test, I am feeling upbeat. Sun Tzu once said in his book The Art of
War, Know yourself and know your enemy. It is important to know yourself and your five core strengths.
